Careers Team
The Careers Team is a team under the Vice President External, who is responsible for both sponsorships and career-related events, such as the Careers Fair and the annual Careers Guide. The responsibilities of a Careers Team member may include, but not limited to, assisting the VPE in
- Organising various career-related activities throughout the year, e.g. the Careers Fair and Career Workshops
- Preparing the Careers Guide and website publications, e.g. by interviewing industry figures, researching various internship/graduate programs and writing articles
Fundraising Committee
The Fundraising and Financing subcommittee is for those who enjoy being innovative with fundraising ideas and gaining some insight into budgeting. You will be working in a team to research and implement ideas to either create new fundraising events or improve existing ones. There will be opportunities to work with other ASOC teams, Macquarie ASSOC team (for joint fundraising events) and gain some experience in the budgeting process. You will also learn to operate Orgsync to keep the rest of ASOC updated with our finances. It will be all FUNdraising and just a little bit of seriousness!
Responsibilities in this subcommittee will include:
- Planning and preparation of fundraising events
- Running and monitoring fundraising events
- Updating and reviewing budgets for events
- Keeping Orgsync up to date
Information Technology Committee
The IT committee's responsibilities include the maintenance and management of ASOC's online presence. This includes everything from keeping the website updated to developing web applications. We're looking for people with and without a technical background, and training will be provided if necessary, so don't let that stop you from applying. By joining this committee, you will of course learn technical skills, but you will also develop important soft skills such as communication and teamwork. The IT Committee has the following core responsibilities:
- Web application development
- Social media data collection for analytics
- Making sure the website is functional and up-to-date
- Documentation and continual improvement of the above processes
Marketing Committee
The marketing team’s main goal is to ensure all Actuarial students are aware of the upcoming ASOC events. There can be several events happening in the one week so it can get pretty hectic for the students to keep track and juggle their study at the same time. My marketing team and I will strive to encourage and remind students that study is not everything. Attending social, sports and career events is important to gain a balance in life. We will reach out to all students through different forms of communication whether it will be facebook, fliers, lecture bashes, videos, etc.
This year my marketing team and I will strive to introduce more marketing methods. This may include an ASOC calendar where all the events will be consolidated in one place for everyone to see. We will also enhance our current methods of marketing to be more engaging and persuasive as the event organisers and coordinators have put in a lot of effort in making the events for perfect for ASOC members.
Peer Support Team
Peer Mentor
The ASOC Peer Mentor program is designed to assist new actuarial students in their transition to their first year of university. This initiative is supported by the UNSW Counselling Unit and all members will complete an ASB Peer-Mentor Training Program. A Peer Mentor is responsible for conducting weekly sessions with a small group of students for the first few weeks of semester one. A Peer Mentor’s role is to establish a friendly environment for new students to get to know each other by facilitating conversation, but also for them to get to know about university and ASOC.
Peer Support
Peer support sessions act as supplements to existing lectures and tutorials by giving students more opportunity to ask questions and enhance their understanding of the week’s material in a informal, friendly environment, ran entirely by your peers. The main responsibilities of a peer support leader are to conduct one hour (or more) Peer Support sessions per week, prepare beforehand the relevant material thoroughly and help evaluate the program. A successful Peer Support Leader should have sound academic record, excellent communication skills and good understanding of the needs of students.
Photography Committee
ASOC’s Photography Subcomittee is for those who love to capture memories and make them last forever. Through simple shutter clicks, you have the power to take down all those amazing memories we share throughout the year, like the glamour at JASS Ball, Crazy-fun times at Camp, be right in the action during our sport events and numerous social events. We welcome every kind of photographer, whether you simply love to take photos or you have your own expertise and professional experiences, we want YOU to be the one that creates lasting memories for all the epic events we have at ASOC.
- Photographing at social, sports and major events of the year! (These will also be used as source for FABs (Finity Actuarial Bulletin) and promotion by Marketing Subcomm)
- Filming and create documentation of annual major events such as CAMP, JASS BALL etc.
- Responsible for releasing images onto social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.

Publications Committee
ASOC's Design & Publications Committee is for those eager to flex their creative muscle in a field of economics and numbers. If you like designing things that are aesthetically pleasing, work well to meet deadlines, and take pride in your work, this is the team for you! Committee members will work closely with other teams, and gain an insight into the workings of ASOC and the design process.
Experience in Photoshop and Indesign will be looked upon positively.
Responsibilities in this committee include:
- Production of the Finity Actuarial Bulletin (FAB)
- Designing layouts for the Careers Guide
- Creation of banners for social media
Sports Committee
Join ASOC's Sports Subcommittee to gain experience working with a team and organising sporting events. Our goal is provide UNSW Actuarial students with some fun and exercise and the opportunity to socialise with sponsors and other actuarial students. In this committee, you will be given the chance to meet many new people as well as providing a say in what sporting events ASOC should run and how it should be run.
Roles in this subcommittee will include;
- Assisting in the organisation of the annual Soccer and Basketball Tournaments with Macquarie's Actuarial Society
- Devising side games for sports
- Researching venues and pricing of events
- Generating ideas for any new sports - we are currently looking into introducing Rock Climbing and Flip Out Trampolining

Fundraising Committee
The fundraising committee’s main commitment is to raise money for the Joint Actuarial Student Society Ball (JASS Ball). This is primarily done through Krispy Kreme sales and other fundraising events (we’re always open for new ideas!). Other commitments include working together with the marketing and photography team for promotional videos and helping out with the camp and ball team. This means that you will be working a lot with other people but you will also be thoroughly rewarded with all the experiences and lessons you learn throughout the year.
In 2014, ASOC is hoping to donate part of the fundraising money to bushfire victims as 2013 was Australia’s hottest year on record. For this to happen, ASOC needs new and fun fundraising events so if you’re a creative thinker and wish to improve your communication and teamwork abilities then the fundraising committee is perfect for you!

The IT committee's responsibilities include the maintenance and management of ASOC's online presence. This includes everything from managing our internal email system to the keeping the website up to date and backed up. Naturally this role tends to attract people with a technical background however no such prerequisites exist. By joining this committee, not only will you improve and learn technical skills but you will also develop important soft skills such as communication. The IT Committee has the following core responsibilities:
- Make sure the website is functional and accessible
- Performing updates to both the website software and its content
- Ensure that regular backups are scheduled and taken for all online systems
- Synchronising the delivery of information over various social mediums
- Project based web application development
- Documentation and continual improvement of the above processes

Throughout the year, ASOC holds events such as camp, the JASS Ball, Poker Night and numerous others. While you will have an amazing time at these events, we wouldn't want to forget these memories. The photography team is responsible for taking photos of these events so that these great moments will never be forgotten! The photos will also be utilised by the Publications team to help create editions of FAB so we can reflect on the great times and the Marketing team to promote these awesome events in the future.
Publications Committee
ASOC’s Publications Committee is the creative bunch in Actuarial, the ones who use both sides of their brain. Our goal is to create aesthetic designs and visually communicate, document and advertise ASOC’s events. During the year the committee will produce FABS (Finity Actuarial Bulletin), Banners, Flyers and the Career’s Guide. Committee members are required to work with the Fundraising, Marketing, IT, Photography and Careers team.
Committee Members will be given training in Indesign and Photoshop.

The ASOC Sports Committee is responsible to organise social sports events so that UNSW actuarial students can relax and exercise their physical body after utilising their brain for such a challenging degree. If you are extremely interested in sports and want to have an opportunity to organise events while working with people from different years, then the sports committee is the perfect place for you!
